Applying the Dreyfus Model of Skill Acquisition to the Whole-Team Approach

At San Francisco Agile 2012, I had the good fortune to pair up with Matt Barcomb for a session about growing the Whole-Team approach. Matt found ways to apply the Dreyfus Model of Skill Acquisition to help teams understand the various stages of growth as a team which commits to delivering high-quality software learns ways to achieve their goals together. I provided examples from my current team, which, after almost nine years, has traits that are compatible with the “Expert” Dreyfus level.

Matt also had a daring idea to dispense with our slides and draw “cave paintings” on the whiteboard as we worked through the levels. Here are the cave paintings. Please ask questions about anything that intrigues you, and I will blog further.
